Why This Way
Generic AI tools make the problem worse, not better
Two things stand between South African teachers and the AI tools already on the market, and both shape how this programme is built.
Generic AI chatbots
- Fluent, but not curriculum-aware, with no way to verify the output is even correct.
- Up to 90% of generated content has to be substantially rewritten by hand before it's fit for moderation.
- In Mathematics, the risk is sharper: a plausible-looking but arithmetically wrong memorandum can reach a classroom before anyone notices.
The payer-user disconnect
- The teacher feels the pain, but has no personal budget to fund a solution.
- Budget was cited as the reason for not signing up in every survey response and direct reply Grow Smart SA received, even where the need was rated urgent.
- The real buyer is school management, a governing body, or a funded cohort sponsored by a union or district.
